Hanh’s Story

Hanh* was brought to Hong Kong at only 11 years old. Neglected and far away from his homeland, Hanh had a very challenging start to life.

Many years later, most of Hanh’s life has been marked by uncertainty and imprisonment. Having served a prison sentence Hanh was meant to be released three years ago.

However, his country of origin refused to recognize his citizenship and he became a stateless person. Instead of providing him with permission to stay in Hong Kong, Hanh was detained indefinitely by Immigration authorities - essentially stuck in limbo.

Hanh contacted us at the Hong Kong Dignity Institute asking for legal help. We supported Hanh in filing a habeas corpus application – hoping to seek justice and freedom for him.

We are delighted to announce that Hanh has been released from detention! Hanh is slowly adjusting to his new life of freedom and is hopeful about what his future holds.

“I need time to adjust to this new life, but I just want to thank you...” – Hanh
