Sexual Offences Reform

Trauma-Informed Justice in Combatting Sexual Violence

For nearly half a century, Hong Kong’s sexual offence laws have remained largely frozen in time, rooted in concepts from the 1970s that fail to protect the survivors of sexual violence in our society today.

This year, the Hong Kong Government has announced a public consultation for reforms. As an organisation working with the marginalised groups, we are taking this opportunity to bring to light the true realities of trauma and the power dynamics faced by sexual violence survivors in legal proceedings.

A series of articles from a legal and mental health perspective will unfold the systemic failures of our legal system—from a victim-blaming approach to the re-traumatisation of child survivors in court — we advocate for a trauma-informed legal framework that rebuts sexual violence myths and respects sexual autonomy.
